The Stainless Steel Exhaust Project

Not long after purchase the first restoration project presented itself. The mild steel exhaust system was rusting badly and starting to leak gases ( shown in photo )

Replacement was needed, which would be a simple task under normal circumstances, but this was no ordinary system because of the turbocharger.

To retain the unique turbocharged feature, I decided to have a replacement exhaust system fabricated.

I only wanted to do this job once so I opted to go for the more expensive option of having the system custom made in stainless steel.

Hayward and Scott Stainless Steel Fabrications ( based in Basildon ) were chosen to do the work which began in the late 1980's, and was done in stages.

This is an early stage of the replacement system.

The pipe coming from the turbo is temporary, as it is made up of two slightly different gauge pipes welded together.

This was done to allow the vehicle to be driven during the restoration process, but would later be replaced with one complete 3.5 inch bore pipe routed in a different way.
